Fanning the flames of good design

From the exterior to the interior, design features within a building can also have a dramatic effect on atmosphere — it’s not just up to the soft furnishings to achieve this. Looking at the hospitality industry for example, where hotels and restaurants are all designed with the aim of getting guests to linger longer and ultimately return, a sure way of creating this atmosphere is by including a fireplace.

Delving into design

Our recent research report echoed this sentiment. The architects and designers that we surveyed believe that there are several benefits in including flame installations into their designs, including the creation of a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, that warmth or the perception of warmth creates, and the feeling of trust and creation of aspirational spaces.

Despite these benefits, the majority of respondents (79%) were concerned about using flame in their projects. Health and safety is the biggest issue (46%), followed by energy efficiency (39%), and cost (32%).

This is hardly surprising given the prevailing attitudes towards pollution, improving air quality, especially in London, with the changing legislation around the use of open flames in commercial spaces. However, if presented with safer options or technology, 53% of designers and architects would be willing to include flame effects more frequently in their designs.

We believe that electric flame technology can provide the answer, without needing to compromise on aesthetics, or having to worry about cost, efficiency or even health and safety.

Flame technology 

Flame technology from Glen Dimplex Heating and Ventilation can support innovative design — it has come a long way since the radiant gas fires of the 1980s. Using 3D technology, the LED lights can be positioned in such a way that the fire bed appears to be behind the flames. In addition, a smoke or mist effect can be added using Optimyst technology. The LED logs can even be set to sporadically spark —  all combining to produce a very convincing illusion of a real fire.

But because electric fires do not produce a real flame; the flame effect is safe, cool to the touch and there can be no risk of injury or stray sparks. Combine this with the fact that electric fires are 100% energy efficient and have very little energy consumption and the argument becomes clear —  flame can once again become an important part of your design.
